My License Is Suspended/Revoked Because I Missed a Court Date (Failure to Appear)

Probably the most common reason for a suspended license in this state is for missing a court date on a traffic offense. People get tickets and then get busy and forget about them, not realizing what a nightmarish situation it can create. If your license is suspended for this reason, it's very important that you take the proper steps to clear up those holds.

This page describes the procedures you need to take in dealing with the tickets that caused the hold on your license, before you can deal with your current driving while suspended or revoked ticket.

Most importantly, you need to know what type of tickets you have pending in the court(s) where you missed your court date.

If the tickets you have pending are moving violations, then just paying the tickets can result in points on your license. Accumulating too many points can result in another suspension of your license.

Instead of paying the tickets, you need to hire an attorney to have those tickets amended to non-moving violations. Once they have been amended and you pay the accompanying fine, the court will give you a compliance letter to give to the Driver's License Bureau, so that they can remove the hold from your license.

You will also have to pay a reinstatement fee at your local driver's license office.

If the tickets you have pending are not moving violations and won't result in points on your license, you may be able to just pay the tickets and get a letter of compliance from the court. Once you get that letter, you can give it to the Driver's License Bureau and they will remove the hold from your license.

You will also have to pay a reinstatement fee at your local driver's license office.

*NOTE THAT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHETHER IT IS A MOVING OR NON-MOVING VIOLATION. IF YOU'RE NOT SURE, CALL OUR OFFICE (314) 895-4040.

Another issue you might face is that many courts will issue a warrant for your arrest as well as putting a hold on your license when you miss a court date. If this has happened, you may have to post a bond with the court before taking any further action. Some courts will let an attorney appear on your behalf without requiring that you post a bond, but not all of them. Our staff is very knowledgeable about which courts will allow this.
